About the Play

“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.”

Shakespeare's Macbeth is one of the most electrifying plays ever written—a thunderous drama of ambition, supernatural dread, and moral collapse. When the brave Scottish general Macbeth receives a prophecy from three witches that he shall be king, he and his ruthlessly ambitious wife set in motion a chain of murder and treachery that spirals into madness and ruin.

Written around 1606, Macbeth is Shakespeare's shortest and arguably most intense tragedy. Set against the wild Scottish highlands, it plumbs the darkest corners of human nature: the seduction of power, the corrosive effect of guilt, and the cost of ambition without conscience.
